Town Criers

 
 

John Smith, Town Crier of Prestonpans and Kilwinning has led ten thousand pipers and drummers down The Avenue of the Americas in New York on Tartan Day.  He is joined by René Coupée the “most handsome Town Crier in Almelo in the Netherlands.  René is a landlord and cook and his cooking is famous all over his restaurant!”.  He is accompanied by his wife Yvonne.  He is organising the European Championship town Crying in Almelo in 2008.  The Town Criers herald the start of the Cavalcade.

 

The Start

 
 

At 2.30pm the salute takers, the General Officer Commanding 2 Division and the Army in Scotland, North England and Northern Ireland and Governor of Edinburgh Castle, Major General David McDowall together with the Right Honourable Reverend George Grubb, Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh and Her Majesty’s Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh will take their seats in the VIP Grandstand.  They are accompanied by representatives of The Scottish Sun, sponsors of the event, and representatives of the City of Edinburgh Council.

The Harley Davidson Owners Group come from all over Scotland.  The Dunedin Chapter is the original and oldest in Scotland with over 250 members.  Their members travel the world promoting the Harley lifestyle, the Dunedin Chapter and Scotland.  The Director is George McGuire assisted by Stuart Caplan.  They are sponsored by Edinburgh Harley-Davidson.

Way back in the year 2000 “North of the Border up Perthshire Way” a small group of Gold Wing riders decided to set up a motorcycle club in Scotland for owners of these magnificent flying machines.  The club boasts an ever increasing membership and has a packed itinerary of organised runs, promotional events, galas, displays and parades.  Their most recent Charitable event was to help the Cast and Crew of the TV series Emmerdale to raise funds for UCAN, an Aberdeen cancer charity.  If you see them on the road remember to give them a wave!

Try Cycling in Edinburgh aims to encourage and support those wishing to cycle more often.  Cycling can be for sport, leisure, fun as well as travel.  They all love cycling – think of joining them.

Noted for their impeccable smart red tunics and discipline, the Imps originated in the 1970s from The Hackney Adventure Holiday Project – a charity for deprived children from London’s east end founded by Imps Team Director, Roy Pratt MBE.  The Imps are aged between five and sixteen years of age.

The Regiment got its name as a result of their First Colonel, the Earl of Oxford and their distinctive blue uniforms.  The solid silver Kettle Drums were presented to the band in 1805 by King George III.  The band requires all its musicians to undertake an intensive five month Household Cavalry Equestrian Course.

Taipei First Girls' Senior High School Honour Guard and Drum Corps

 
 

The school was founded in 1904.  The students come from all over Taiwan to study aged between 16 and 18.  Along with its outstanding academic record the school is also very proud of its marching band and honour guard and colour guard.

Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes & Drums (USA)

 
 

This is recognised as one of the world’s finest fife and drum corps.  Their uniforms are authentic dress reproductions of the New England regiments of the Continental Army circa 1779.

The Edinburgh Tattoo Highland Spring Dancers are joined by Ozscot Australia Highland Dancers, The Canadian Highland Dance Team, the New Zealand Highland Dancers and South African Highland Dancers.

The Moscow Military Conservatoire was established in 1936 as school for military conductors.  Every member of this band is therefore a future military conductor and contributes his own interpretive sense and vision towards the musical pieces they perform.

The music of the steelpan has become one of the most dynamic and enthralling of the 21st Century.  This band formed in 1995 with only 11 members and now has 60.  They play a mixture of soul and calypso.

The Tattoo Choir

 
 

The Kevock Choir was founded in 1967 in Lasswade by former pupils of Lasswade High School.  The choir is named after the adjacent Kevock Valley.  They hold their annual concert in the Usher Hall in the spring.

Edinburgh Postal Pipe Band and Dancers

 
 

The band was reformed in 1972 by Post Office staff in Edinburgh.  They encourage dancing as well as teaching and playing music.  The band plays regularly at Civic Receptions in the City and has played at the Beating Retreat on Edinburgh Castle Esplanade every year since 1980.  Today they are “massing” with -

The Scout Centenary Pipe Band

 
 

Pipers and Drummers from North Berwick, Hawick, Greenock, Strathaven, Glasgow, Pitlochry, Portsoy, Livingston, Dollar, Monifeith  and Waterford in Ireland who are scouts or have been scouts in the past 100 years have joined together to help give focus at some of the many events celebrating the formation of Scouting on 1st August 1907.  The band made its inaugural appearance at the Edinburgh Festivals’ Cavalcade last year.  The youngest on parade is 11 and the oldest is 78.

Edinburgh Mela

 
 

The Edinburgh Mela is now in its 13th year.  It is the largest intercultural art based event in Scotland.  Tastes and experiences from various cultures and communities are all in one space – Pilrig Park on 1st and 2nd September.  The Mela has brought the Pakistan Pipe Band to represent them again this year.

American High School Theatre Festival

 
 

2007 will be American High School Theatre Festival’s 13th year at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.  There programme is a nomination/application process whereby the finest in American High School Theatre are nominated to apply for acceptance.  Applications are reviewed by their Board of Advisors who are all College and University Theatre Department Chairs.  The winning groups have over one year to plan and fundraise for their once-in –a-lifetime experience at the Fringe.  They are performing at Churchill Theatre and Blueside all ay every day and at Greenside from 6-11 August.   They have a float and a walking group in the Cavalcade.

If its thrills, laughter and dazzling entertainment you are looking for then this is for you – Europe’s biggest and best new Circus – Cirque Surreal (pronounced “Sirk” Surreal) at the Big Top on the Meadows until August 26.  There are international artistes from 10 different countries performing in this amazing show.  C’mon give them a big waver – they’ve travelled from al over the world to be here in Edinburgh and their first show is this evening.

Oh yes!  They’re back – for an amazing ninth year – those fabulous Lady Boys of Bangkok with their new cabaret show – Divas Las Vegas.  I know we tell you this every year – but every one of those stunning “women” is actually a man!  An can you spot the famous faces?  It can’t be – but it certainly looks like it – Hey Elvis – is that really you?  The Lady Boys are on at the Meadows until September 1st.

Pulse of the Place - Duncan Place Resource Centre

 
 

This is a youth led samba drumming group.  Children should be seen and not heard….not likely.  Here is a group of young people who are always heard before they are seen – from Duncan Place Resource Centre in Leith – Pulse of the Place – Edinburgh’s only youth samba drumming band.

Forth Children’s Theatre

 
 

For the 29th consecutive year Forth Children’s Theatre – Edinburgh’s own premier young peoples’ theatre company present their Festival Fringe production.  This year its The Wiz an updated retelling of the story of The Wizard of Oz.  Come on down to venue 120 for one of the hottest tickets in Town.  Venue 120 is Inverleith Church from 3-11 August at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30.  No performance on Sundays.

Tempo Musical Productions

 
 

One of the leading amateur theatre groups in Edinburgh since 1991, Tempo Musical Productions produce two shows a year and perform several annual fundraising and charity supporting concerts.  They are back in St Oswald’s Hall with a repeat of their smash hit production in February with a revamped and spectacular musical – SPEND, SPEND, SPEND. Drama, nostalgia, comedy, music and fun.  They are at St Oswald’s Hall Venue 180 at 7.35pm from 11-18 August.

Dulsori is the first Korean arts company based in the UK.  Its aim is to introduce high quality Korean arts and culture to the UK as well as Europe.  Dulsori’s passionate, colorful and interactive performance showcases the exceptional heritage and spirited origins of traditional Korean culture.  Can drumming make you happy?  Judging by audience reaction, it works. Young Palestinian and Iraqi members and friends from El Funoun Drama Group are performing at Theatre Workshop from August 9-11 at 6pm.  Their show Journey into the Unknown offers some insight into the crazy reality of the life of Palestinian refuges.  Will they ever escape from a shackled existence? The Stewartry Area Windband and the Galloway Pipers are made up from young people from the four high schools in the Stewartry area of Dumfries and Galloway.  The Band and Pipers have just returned from a highly successful tour of Ypres in Belgium performing at the Menin Gate.

Representing the huge programme at clubWEST @ Three Sisters are young, gifted and Indian, Anshul Tomer, a talented singer of Bollywood popular and Hindi traditional songs and Shining Bear, known simply as “Bear” to his friends who is one of the world’s most accomplished Didgeridoo players.  Bear is at clubWEST @ Three Sisters from 5-25 August at 7pm and Anshul Tomer from 19-25 August at 12noon.

Potato Theatre are at Assembly at Hill Street Theatre at 22.05 from 3-27 August with a cheeky comic cabaret of the bizarre and surreal.  Hitler does the housework, Al Qaeda launch their 2007 publicity and the Queen discovers fresh marital problems.

Flesh

 
 

The group of 30 young actors in roles of slaves, owners, prostitutes and eighteenth century merchants are performing Flesh -  a new play written to mark the bicentenary of the ban of slave trade.  It was premiered in Westminster Abbey.  Flesh portrays the horrors of slavery in a gripping production where memory and nightmare interweave to tell of one man’s triumphant struggle for freedom.  It is at St John’s Church, Princes Street from 6-11 August at 7.30pm.

This group is an award-winning theatre troupe from Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, Virginia, USA.  Follow the seagulls as they flock to see this award-winning theatre troupe’s production of The Nine Variations where 4 guys and 11 girls portray Kostia and Nina the star-crossed lovers as they explore 42 ways to leave your tragic love behind you with wit, wisdom, passion and pathos.  It is on at Rocket@Demarco Roxy Art House from 6-11 August at 15.05 daily.

Spin Odyssey is a hip-hop dance comedy show that mixes spectacular break dancing with hilarious slapstick comedy.  The stars of the show, a dance and physical performance team by the name of Last For One were once the world break dancing champions and have a fan base that literally spans the globe.  Korean b-boys (or break dancers) are considered the best in the world right now.  They perform at C Venue from 1-27 August at 4.40pm.

This theatre company is composed of 18-20 year old actors.  They claim to be one of the best-looking Fringe companies.  They perform Shakespeare Bingo featuring A Comedy of Errors at Bedlam from 6-18 August at 11.30am.

Frankenstein Pub is a monster themed pub with two Fringe shows – The Full Moon Show and A Rocky Horror Night.  Join the friends of Frankenstein throughout the Fringe and let them entertain you with their monster experience.  Prepare to be scared – it’s alive.  The Full Moon Show is every Tuesday and Thursday night and the Rocky Horror Night is every Monday and Wednesday.

Carluke Primrose Orchestral Flutes

 
 

This is Scotland’s top flute orchestra and Scottish Champions for the last ten years.  Formed in 1938 the band boasts 7 different types of flutes as well as many percussion instruments.  Scottish Arts Council National Lottery Funding has allowed a youth band to be formed.  Members are aged from 9-66.  The band play classical, easy listening , popular music, film and TV themes as well as military marches.

This is a fully inclusive drama group.  They are producing a show at Venue 125 St Mars Space at 2.15pm from 6-10 August.  The theme is murder and marmalade.  The recipe is to add a slice of arsenic and old lace, stir in the Famous Five, add a little Grease mix with a huge dollop of lively music served with lashings of marmalade.  A spiffing family treat.

The Infinity Repertory Theatre Company

 
 

This youth based Theatre Company is committed to doing new work.  MOD is an original musical comedy inspired by the British pop of the early 60s.  It’s 1964 in a small town in American and the British Invasion led by the Beatles is in full swing.  Every teenager is filled with hope, energy and excitement that is as powerful as the first chord of A Hard Day’s Night.  The show is at the understairs@Apostolic located on Davie Street from 4-11 August at 8.15pm.

Z Theatre Company

 
 

Z Theatre Company have been bringing shows to the Fringe for 26 years.  This is the largest amount of performers ever. The five shows this year are mixed in theme from hard-hitting drama to abstract physical work to comic musicals such as ASBO the Musical and Why You’re Fat & Ugly and Everybody Hates You! The Musical.  They are at Venue 45 (Old St Paul’s Church, Jeffrey Street) from 3.30-8pm from 6-17 August.

Behold the Stinky Flower Patch!  If you have bad news for someone you can tell them that you have a Stinky Flower because no one likes to hear “I’ve got bad news.”  It’s a flower, which is nice because it’s the truth, but in this case it doesn’t smell very good.  But, bad news, like a foul stench, eventually goes away.  This exciting original show comes from New York city, where there’s a lot of bad news (and foul smells).  Their on at C-Soco (next to C-Main on Chambers Street) from 3-14 August at 4.15pm

The Edinburgh Samba School and friends

 
 

The Edinburgh Samba School was founded as a community project and since 1992 has been committed to promoting Brazilian music and culture.  Their special guest leader/teaher for this year’s Cavalcade is John Dirkie founder of “Beats of Brazil”.  The band will perform theh 2006 winning Rio Samba Enredo entitled Amazonas l Edorado é Aqui.  The song describes how although Europeans came to Brazil and stripped the land of its precious resources the invaders met fierce resistance from the country’s inhabitants and how the same indomitable spirit and pride in their beautiful country exists today among the people of Brazil.

BEST COMMUNITY FLOAT

Balbardie Primary School

 
 

This year’s float is an interpretation of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean (arrrrr) and was created by the pupils and float committee members of Balbardie Primary School with sponsorship from local businesses to celebrate Bathgate Procession and John Newlands Day.  This is an annual event that’s been taking place in Bathgate for over 130 years (looks like some of the Pirates have been around for that length of time as well arrrrr).  The Balbardie crew (parents pupils and staff) have worked enthusiastically to build a ship that their Primary School can be proud of and are excited to be sailing the streets of Edinburgh.  So bring us that horizon , drink up me hearties, yo ho!

Fun in the Sun

 
 

These staff from Bank of Scotland in Dalgety Bay are known locally as “Three guys and loads of ladies”.  They’re working towards raising funds for the Bank’s “Fun in the Sun” initiative.  Their goal is to raise the profile of Teenage Cancer Trust.  “Fun in the Sun” is all about enjoying yourself whilst raising funds for a worthwhile cause.

This float is a combine harvester as in the song by the Wurzels.  They have Granny and Grandad at the front and their family at the rear.  They are on their way to the harvest!

Leith Community Concert Band

 
 

The Capital’s longest established marching and concert band celebrates is 21st Birthday this year.  A regular participant in the Cavalcade since 1989 the Band has become a feature of many civic events.  In November it returns to Ypres for the 10th times to play and the Menin Gate for the Remembrance Ceremonies.  They are “massing” with the Rosyth Concert Band.

Rosyth Concert Band

 
 

Rosyth Concert Band began in 1996 and numbers 40 plus members.  They have performed in different venues over the years including local galas, church services as well as the Festival Cavalcade.  For the last five years they have helped to raise money for Parkinson’s Disease Society in Fife through concerts in the Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline.

FACE is a local cancer charity based at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.  It provides support for families and patients affected by cancer.  At Christmas a trip is arranged to Lapland.

Scottish Community Drama Association – Youth

 
 

The youth have just spent five days at drama camp learning drama and theatre skills to take back to their clubs all over Scotland.  Stage combat, accents, working with puppets and dance have been some of the subjects.  They have also done joint workshops with the American High School Drama Youth.  They are 12-18 years old and come from drama clubs from North of Scotland to the Borders, the West of Scotland to Perth, Dundee and Edinburgh.

The Yard is an adventure centre for children with a disability.  [In a pirate voice, please, matey!] Ahoy me hearties and welcome to the Good Ship Yard.   Made from re-cycled treasures by the shipmates’ children with additional support needs.  They are on a voyage on the ocean waves so give ‘em a wave or you’ll be walking the plank.  Ah arrr Jim Lad …….heave ho and off they go!!!

The Hip Bumpers

 
 

This is a health and wellbeing dance based group with emphasis on fun and enjoyment for all.  The group age-range is 26-77 of all abilities and capabilities.  They meet weekly to practice “exercise to music” routines.  They also go to other groups to share these routines and bring a little sunshine into their lives.

Scottish Indian Arts Forum

 
 

The theme of this float is “One Scotland – India 60” to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Indian Independence on August 18 2007.  The Forum strongly supports cultural diversity in Scotland by bringing programmes like Dusherra Festival and Bhagrae Ceilidh Dance Music.  It will  bring for the first time Kathakali style of South Indian Dance and Drama and other folk dances of India as well as Country Dancing for Scotland at the Ross Open Theatre in Princes Street Gardens on Satruday August 18 at 1pm.
